The International Anmchara School in Sega, Ghana

Strawberries

The Anmchara International School was founded in January 2002 on the veranda of a house in a remote, rural village named Sega. While the school only consisted of 16 pupils on its first day, it would become a beacon of hope and promise for hundreds of children in the surrounding area, who were previously without the opportunity for quality education.

Share the World

The school’s motto of “Share the World” stands for the international links it maintains with schools worldwide, the long term volunteer teachers who share their knowledge with the children and the notion that every child is invited to assume a constructive role in our world.

Since the humble establishment of the Anmchara International School in January 2002, the school has grown to include a nursery, primary and junior secondary schools, as well as a kitchen and dining hall where over 300 students are taught and fed every day. The school’s rapid growth can be attributed to the unique intensive learning environment that it provides to its students, as it continues to attract new students from neighboring government run schools.

The Anmchara International School maintains a volunteering program which is an integral part of the school curriculum and the community in Sega. Volunteers are set-up with teaching position based upon their expertise, personal interests and the school’s needs. Volunteers are also encouraged to spearhead new projects such as teaching new and unique subjects, carrying out private learning sessions with the students or attending to the children’s needs in new and creative ways.

Volunteers are not only welcomed into the school, but are also invited to live as members of the community in which they are working. This fosters and maintains the connection and responsibility that the community has towards the school and its students. Students are thus truly able to “Share the World” on a daily basis, not only by acquiring new knowledge and experiences from international friends, but also through sharing their own knowledge with newcomers.
